Meet the Breed

Carolina Kennel Club's first annual Meet the Breed was held on September 23, 2006 at the Bark Park in Greensboro's Country Park. There was a good turnout of both exhibitors and visitors. The weather was pleasant and the event was well organized. There were agility and obedience demonstrations, stupid pet tricks, raffles and even a dog look-alike contest. The exhibits were open to the public from 10am to 4pm and there was a steady crowd all day long.

The Tar Heel Chinese Crested Club's exhibit was decorated with a Chinese theme and included lots of brochures and books, copies of popular breed magazines, scrapbooks and lots of pictures. Mike and DeLisa Parker brought two AKC Champion show dogs, a puff girl and a hairless boy. Barry Holt came with his hairless girl Uli who entertained the crowd with her lovely singing voice. Yvonne McKeag brought three young puppies, 2 puff girls and a hairless boy. Naturally, the puppies went over very well with the public, especially the kids. All the dogs were very outgoing and friendly and they did an excellent job of representing the breed.

The club volunteers spent the day introducing their dogs, answering questions and handing out brochures. There was a lot of interest in the hairless characteristics of the breed. The Powder Puffs were a surprise to many people who didn't know that the breed comes in a coated variety. An unshaved hairy hairless was there with a couple months of growth down his back. This helped to illustrate that even the hairless Cresteds come with varying amounts of body hair. Also, the visitors were told that the hairless breeds require special care such as frequent baths to prevent acne, moisturizing lotion, sunscreen and warm clothes in the winter.

A cameraman from the local television station came by and Yvonne's puppies were on the evening news playing with a toddler. The mayor of Greensboro came to the event and made a special trip just to visit the Chinese Cresteds. Everyone loves to see the Cresteds!

All in all, it was a great day for the club, for the dogs and for the many visitors.
